Day 3

Another massive day of swimming for Day 3 of the Australian Championships with 1 medal and 12 new personal best times.

First up on Day 3 was the 400m Freestyle with 7 of our team in action. There were some good rivalries within our team and the first swimmer to hit the pool was Margaret Edwards. Margaret set the standard with a new long course PB of 7:44.63. Ian Johnston was up next in the following heat and piped Margaret with a 7:43.60. Kylee Murray was our next swimmer and after a great swim, touched in a new PB of 6:29.39. A few heats later, Alison Sakurovs and Shelley Zerni went head to head in the same heat. Shelley held a 2 second lead through most of the race, but Alison started coming back at her in the final lap. At the end they were separated by only 0.43 seconds, with Shelley taking the win, and both of them finishing in new personal best times of 5:23.58 and 5:24.01. The girls had thrown down the challenge to Peter Johnston and Ian Wilson who were still yet to swim. Peter scrapped in just ahead of Shelley with a 5:22.85, but Ian blew everyone away with a new PB of 5:18.13.

The 200m Breaststroke was the next event, with Lauren Leckie, Graham Edwards, Alison, Ian Wilson and Peter in action. Ian took a surprise Bronze and our only medal of the day, while Lauren swam a new PB.

The third event of the day was the 50m Butterfly with some impressive swims by Kylee, Lauren, Shelley and Alison as they all swam new PBs. Kylee took 2.32 seconds off her PB to finish in 42.83. Lauren finished in 40.14 - a 4.78 second PB, and Shelley swam 36.91 - a very impressive time for someone who "can't swim Butterfly". Alison's efforts paled in comparison with a 0.84 second PB to touch in 33.90.

The final individual event of the day was the 100m Backstroke. Ian Johnston swam his first PB of the day, finishing in 2:25.84, while Lauren and Kylee chalked up their 3rd PBs of the day with a 1:30.17 and 1:41.31 respectively.

The day ended with the 4x50m Medley relays for Men and Women. While neither of our teams were in medal contention there was plenty to play for with not much separating the two teams on paper. In the end, the girls came out on top by 0.90 seconds - something the guys won't hear the end of any time soon.
